Where the embroidery goes on a sweatshirt
Fleece is thick and a hoodie has a pocket and a hood, so placement is decided on the proof for the exact style. These are the five placements we sew most and what fits in each.
Sleeve
A small logo, flag or wordmark on the upper sleeve, 2 to 3 inches. Common on crews and quarter-zips with a chest logo.
Back yoke and hood
A wordmark or URL below the collar, or a logo on the side of the hood. Hooped separately; reads as retail merch.
Patch or applique
Full-back embroidery is stitch-heavy and stiff on fleece. For a big back design we recommend an embroidered or twill applique, or a screen print with an embroidered chest.
What embroiders well on fleece
Midweight to heavyweight fleece, 8 oz and up, in cotton or 50/50, holds stitches best and stays flat. Light tri-blend and performance fleece embroider well with the right backing and a lighter stitch density, which we set when we digitize for that fabric. Thread is Madeira polyester and rayon, matched to your Pantone codes from the Madeira color card and logged for reorders. Fine text under a quarter inch and hairline detail are simplified at the proof so the logo reads at left-chest size. Is there a minimum order for embroidered sweatshirts?
No. One embroidered hoodie is a real order. Volume pricing starts at 12 pieces, and sizes, colors and styles mix on one order toward the same tier. Screen printing and DTF on sweatshirts carry a 12-piece minimum because of setup.
Where does embroidery go on a sweatshirt?
Left chest (about 3.5 to 4 inches wide) is the standard business placement. Other options: right chest for a name or title, the sleeve for a secondary logo or flag, the back yoke below the collar, the hood, and the cuff. Full-back embroidery is possible but stitch-heavy; for a large back design we usually recommend a printed or applique approach and embroidery on the chest.
Can you embroider a hoodie through the pocket or seams?
The front pouch pocket of a hoodie limits a center-chest design, so most hoodie logos sit on the left or right chest above the pocket. Hoods, cuffs and sleeves are hooped separately. The proof shows the exact placement on the exact style before anything sews.
