How custom screen printing works

Screen printing pushes ink through a fine mesh stencil onto the garment, one color per screen. It is the oldest apparel decoration method still in daily use, and for bold art in quantity it is still the best value. Here is what happens to your order on our floor.

  1. Separations

Our art department splits your design into one layer per ink color and adds an underbase layer for dark garments.

  2. Screens burned

Each layer is exposed onto a mesh screen coated with light-sensitive emulsion, leaving a stencil of that color.

  3. Ink mixed

Plastisol or water-based ink is mixed to your Pantone and loaded on the press.

  4. Registration

Screens are aligned on the press so every color lands in exactly the same spot on every shirt.

  5. Print and flash

Each color is printed in turn; the underbase is flash-cured between passes so colors stay bright.

  6. Cure

Shirts run through a conveyor dryer at about 320 F so the ink bonds permanently and survives hundreds of washes.

Screen printing vs DTF vs embroidery: which one for your job

We run all three in-house, so the recommendation is about your garment, art and quantity, not about which machine we own.

Screen print when

  • You need 24 or more of the same design
  • The art is bold with a handful of solid colors
  • The garment is cotton or a cotton blend
  • You want the print to outlast the shirt and the lowest cost per piece

Send it to DTF or embroidery when

  • The art is a photo, gradient or has more than six colors
  • The run is under 24 pieces or has many different designs
  • The garment is polyester, performance mesh or a cap
  • It is a polo, jacket or bag where a stitched logo looks right

How custom screen printing is priced

Four things set the price of a screen print job. Knowing them before you ask for a quote lets you move the number yourself.

Ink colors

Each color is a screen and a pass through the press. One-color art is the cheapest thing we print; six colors is six setups. Dark garments add a white underbase screen.

Locations

Front only is the base price. A back print, sleeve print or tag print is another setup and another pass.

Quantity

Setup is fixed, so per-piece pricing drops at 24, 48, 72, 144, 288 and 500. A 144-piece run costs far less per shirt than a 24-piece run of the same art.

Garment

The blank is usually the largest share. We buy at distributor pricing from Gildan, Port Authority, Sport-Tek, Bella+Canvas and others, and can price good, better and best options.

Run sizePer-piece pricingTypical turnaroundNotes

Turnaround starts at proof approval and blank arrival. Rush printing is available at most tiers; tell us the in-hands date up front. For an exact per-piece number, send art, quantity, garment and locations through the quote form; weekday requests usually get a reply the same day.

Preparing artwork for screen printing

File formats

Vector files (AI, EPS, SVG, PDF) separate cleanly into colors and print sharp at any size. A PNG or JPG at 300 dpi at print size works for simple art. Low-resolution logos are redrawn by our art department before proofing.

Print sizes

Full front and full back up to about 12 x 14 in; left chest 3 to 4 in; sleeve about 3 in wide; tag print about 3 in. Oversized and all-over prints are quoted per job.

Colors

Up to six spot colors per location, matched to Pantone. Gradients and photos are simulated with halftones or moved to DTF. Fewer colors means fewer screens and a lower price.

Light vs dark garments

Ink on a white or light shirt prints directly. Dark shirts need a white underbase so the colors stay bright, which is one extra screen. Dark ink on a light shirt is the cheapest combination.

Fine detail

Lines thinner than about 1 point and text smaller than about 8 point can close up on the screen. We flag it on the proof and thicken or resize before printing.

Plastisol, water-based and specialty inks

Plastisol

The industry standard. Opaque, bright, exact Pantone matching, sits on top of the fabric with a slight hand. Best for dark garments, bold logos, team and event shirts, and anything that needs to look identical across a large run.

Water-based

Soaks into the fibers instead of sitting on top, so the print is soft with almost no hand. Best on light cotton for brands, boutiques and vintage-style art. Less opaque on dark garments.

Specialty inks

Puff, metallic, glow-in-the-dark, high-density and discharge effects are available on request and quoted per job. Ask when you send the art if you want a raised or textured effect.

Fabrics that screen print well

  • 100% cotton tees and long sleeves: ideal, sharpest results
  • 50/50 and tri-blends: ideal; use a blend-friendly ink to prevent dye migration
  • Cotton fleece hoodies and sweatpants: ideal for bold art
  • Canvas totes: ideal, one or two colors
  • 100% polyester performance tees: printable with low-cure inks, but DTF is usually cleaner and cheaper
  • Nylon, coated and waterproof fabrics: DTF or embroidery
  • Caps and beanies: embroidery or DTF, not screen print
  • Hi-vis safety fabrics: printable with the right ink; we test-print first

Custom screen printing questions

How much does custom screen printing cost?

Price per shirt depends on the garment, the number of ink colors, the number of print locations and the quantity. One-color, front-only art on a light cotton tee at 72 or more pieces is the cheapest combination. Per-piece pricing drops at 24, 48, 72, 144, 288 and 500. Send art, quantity and garment through the quote form for an exact per-piece number, usually returned the same business day.

What is the minimum order for screen printing?

Screen printing is priced for 12 pieces and up and becomes the most economical method at about 24 to 48 pieces, because the screens and press setup are spread across the run. For fewer than 12 shirts, or for full-color art, DTF transfers are usually the better value and have no minimum.

Can you screen print just one shirt?

We can, but the setup cost makes a single screen printed shirt expensive. For one to a dozen shirts we recommend DTF printing, which produces a comparable result on cotton and polyester with no screens. The quote form will route a small order to the right method automatically.

How long does screen printing last?

Properly cured plastisol ink outlasts the shirt; it will survive hundreds of washes without cracking or fading when washed inside out in cold water and not ironed directly. Water-based prints are slightly softer and fade gently over time like the garment itself.

How long does a screen printing order take?

Standard production is 7 to 14 business days after proof approval and blank arrival, depending on run size; 500-piece and larger orders are scheduled as press days and quoted at 2 to 3 weeks. Rush printing is available at most quantities; give us the in-hands date when you request the quote.

How many colors can you screen print?

Up to six spot colors per location, each matched to a Pantone reference. Photos, gradients and designs with more than six colors are printed with DTF transfers, which have no color limit, or simulated with halftones on press.

What is the difference between screen printing and a heat press or DTF?

Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh stencil directly into the fabric, one color at a time, and cures it with heat; it is the most durable and the cheapest per piece at volume. DTF prints the design onto a film and heat-presses it onto the garment; it handles unlimited color and works on polyester, but adds a thin film layer. We run both and recommend by garment, art and quantity.

Which shirts are best for screen printing?

100% cotton and cotton-blend tees, long sleeves and fleece hoodies give the sharpest results. We stock Gildan, Port Authority, Sport-Tek, Bella+Canvas and other brands at wholesale and can price a good, better and best option for any run. Polyester performance shirts can be screen printed with low-cure inks but usually print cleaner with DTF.

Can I bring my own shirts to be screen printed?

Often, yes. Bring a sample by the Tempe shop so we can confirm the fabric takes ink and the sizes are consistent. Customer-supplied garments are printed at your risk, since we cannot replace a misprint on a shirt we did not source, and for most runs our wholesale blank pricing is lower than retail.

Where can I find screen printing near me in the Phoenix area?

Precision Graphics is at 1715 W 4th St in Tempe, near Priest Dr and the Loop 202, about 10 minutes from ASU and Sky Harbor and 15 to 20 minutes from Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Gilbert and downtown Phoenix. The showroom is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with local pickup, Valley delivery on larger orders and shipping anywhere in the U.S.
